BerkeleyMapper Help Document

BerkeleyMapper operates principally by working with other web-applications to provide a front-end for geographic data. The data passed to BerkeleyMapper is usually points, but polygons and line can also be displayed. Since BerkeleyMapper is a web-application that is configurable by calling sites, not all options listed in this help document may be available to all users.

Many items have help tips available, indicated by the presence of the icon. If after reading this documentation, you still have questions, you may bug the developer at bnhm@berkeley.edu

This is the page as it may appear when first calling BerkeleyMapper. The image below shows the location of key elements of the BerkeleyMapper interface.

    1. Map Functions Toolbar
      Click & drag to pan
Click to define polygon to measure area, line, or perform spatial query.
    2. Map Tools Toolbar
      Zoom to extents
    3. Tabs available are Legend, Layers, and Options (see sections in help-document on use of tabs)
    4. Map View displays the map itself.
    5. Results are automatically update to show records that are in the map view.
    6. Show will popup a box showing a detail of this area.

Performing a spatial query and listing point attributes
The user can select the radio button in the Map Functions Toolbar to query features on the map.

Querying PolygonsClick points to define a polygon area and then click the "Close Area" button when you are done drawing. Once you have created the polygon, press the "Query Points" button and all of the point records within the polygon will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.
Spatial Select on Error Radii If the user has checked the "Spatial select on error radii" box in the Query section of the Tools tab AND if there are error radii available, then the drawing a polygon will select all points within the polygon and any points with an error radius that intersects that area (so the actual point center may not be within the box itself). Clicking once will retrieve any points that are at that exact spot or any points with an error radius that overlaps that spot.
    1. Spatial query extent defined by clicking map (with selected).
    2. Measure box shows dimensions of area on map.
    3. Query box contains query submit button and option to perform selection on error radii.
    4. Explanatory Text showing how many records are selected in this area. Results are shown in table below.
    Options Tab
    1. Color By Displays data features you can color points on. This is configurable by calling application.
    2. Label By Displays data features that you can label using available attributes.
    3. Map Controls Turn on/off display of precision symbols and Markers.
    4. Map Window Size Allows the user to increase or decrease the map window window size.
    5. Download Options Allows user to download records.
    6. Annotate/Email Comments to organizations responsible for data.
    Tools Tab
The Tools Tab allows the user to measure lines and areas and also to construct areas for querying points within. Follow on-screen instructions to use these features.
